The Pilgrimage to Santiago in June 2006

During the month of June 2006, 12.894 pilgrims were received at the Pilgrim’s Office. The number of pilgrims in the year 2005 during the same period was 12.620.

Of those pilgrims, 4.930 were women (37,96%) and 7.964 men (61,76%). 9.849 pilgrims arrived on foot (77,38 %), 2.968 by bicycle (22,85%),71 on horseback (0.54%) and 6 pilgrims on wheel-chair.

2.063 pilgrims were younger than 30 years old (15,99%); 7.998 were between 30 and 60 years old (62,02%); 2.833 were aged above 60 years old (21,97%).

Spanish: 4.959 (38,45 %). Most of the pilgrims come from: Cataluña, 820 (16,53%); Madrid with 722 (14,55%); Andalucía, 601 (12,11%); Valencia with 559 (9,18%); País Vasco, 489 (9,8 %); Castilla León, 366 (7,38%) and Galicia with 289 (5,82%)

Foreigners: 7.935 (61,54%). Most of the pilgrims come from the following countries: Germany with 1.453 (18,31%); France with1.280 (16,13%); Italy with 1.228 (15,47%); the Nederland’s with 483 (6,08%); the Unites States with 389 (4,9%); Portugal with 387 (4,87%); Canada with 270 (3,4%); Unites Kindom with 267 (3,36%) and Austria with 256 (3,22%)

Regarding the professional fields, the majority of pilgrims are retired with 3.045 pilgrims (23,61 %); employees with 2.276 (17,65 %), freelancers with 1.849 pilgrims (14,34%); technicians with 1.626 (12,61%); students with 1055 (8,18%), civil servants with 889 (6,89%); teachers with 585 (4,53%) etc.

Starting Points.

Most of the pilgrims received during the month of June started their Way to Santiago in: Saint Jean Pied de Port, 2.132 (16,53%); Roncesvalles, 1.384 (10,73 %); Sarria 1.382 (10,71%); León 869 (6,73%); Cebreiro 674 (5,22%), Pamplona 617 (4,78%), Le Puy 573 (4,58%); Ponferrada 542 (4,2%); Astorga 458 (3,55 %), Burgos 357 (2,76%), etc.

The Chosen Routes.

Most of the pilgrims chose the French Way with 11.036 (85,59 %); followed by the Portuguese Route with 685 pilgrims (5,31 %), the Silver Way has been chosen by 524 pilgrims (4,06 %), the Northern Way with 486 (3,76%), and the English Way with 74 (0,57%) pilgrims.
